THE FMS ADVANTAGE - PROJECTSFMS presents our clients with mitigation options based on the full range of EMF standards, government policies, recognized health organizations, and sensitive instrument manufacturers. EMF/EMI mitigation is achieved through a number of measures – some low tech and inexpensive. FMS understands EMF mitigation is not “one size fits all” and that it is our responsibility to find the least-cost solution to the problem. We develop technically cost effective solutions and collaborate with our clients to achieve the optimum and appropriate outcomes for our clients’ facilities – a rigorous balance of cost and performance without excessive shielding and arbitrary specifications. The following are a few typical examples of EMI mitigation project solutions with reduced cost, developed by FMS. PACIFIC NORTHWEST NATIONAL LABORATORYPHYSICAL SCIENCES FACILITY (PSF) PNNL- PSF Horn Rapids Triangle Site Richland, Washington After an extensive EMI threat risk review for this major research laboratory complex, FMS recommended changes to a prior EMI mitigation shielding specification which resulted in more than $500,000 in project savings and a more flexible lab design. During the design phase of the laboratory facilities, FMS’ extensive simulation studies of the complex’s electrical distribution system, demonstrated that EMF emissions and associated EMI threat risk to sensitive research equipment could be substantially reduced by relatively minor changes in electrical conduit routing and use of rigid conduit. As a result, a considerable amount of expensive shielding was eliminated from the project. BROCKMAN HALL OF PHYSICSRice University Houston, Texas FMS provided a comprehensive EMI threat analysis of the new physics research building site and construction plans. Computer simulation studies conducted by FMS of the building’s electrical distribution system provided a view of potential EMI threat conditions in research labs near high current electrical equipment. FMS developed innovative low cost mitigation schemes for a number of laboratory locations where sensitive equipment may have been at EMI threat risk. The novel shielding design resulted in an estimated mitigation savings of $100,000 or more without compromise of the required low EMF laboratory specification. LABORATORY FOR INTERDISCIPLINARY SCIENCEAND ENGINEERING (LISE) Harvard University Cambridge, MA FMS was engaged by the University to evaluate an extremely serious EMI threat condition in this newly constructed nanotechnology research facility, associated with a group of super conducting research magnets (up to 14 Tesla) scheduled for installation in the building, whose DC fringe fields poised a serious EMI threat to operation of nearby multiple SEM/TEM microscopes. FMS developed and managed a collaborative effort with the magnet manufacture to incorporate a novel dipole cancellation design to dramatically reduce DC fringe field levels from the magnets. The magnet’s fringe field levels through incorporation of the novel design, were successfully reduced from 5,000 mG to <1 mG and eliminated EMI threat potential to the nearby microscopes and other sensitive equipment. Implementation of the innovative magnet cancellation scheme resulted in an estimated savings of some $26 million in conventional shielding costs. METLIFE1095 Avenue of the Americas New York City, NY As part of a refurbishment project, FMS conducted an extensive assessment of EMF conditions present in the 20th floor of this New York landmark building. Elevated AC magnetic field levels were present in areas of the 20th floor located beneath ConEdison transformers and building electrical distribution equipment on the floor above. To mitigate magnetic field levels to acceptably lower values, FMS recommended that shielding be installed in an area of the 20th floor ceiling prior to build out of the space for office use. As the project was on an accelerated fast-track basis and with budget constraints, FMS developed an ingenious method of installation which greatly minimized costly site installation time. The shielding installation was successfully completed in record time and reduced costs by over $50,000 |
